Sustainability is really a really important part of Product Design.  Questions on this issue will definitely be on the Yr13 exam paper.

Businesses use LCA (Life Cycle Assessments to assess the impact of the manufacture of their products.  An LCA and an LCI take into account the big picture of a product from the extraction of the raw materials to its disposal at the end of its life.  What impact does each product have on the environment?  Study the sheet above.


Businesses are always looking for ways to reduce their costs - look at the case study of the Cola can on the sheet above.  Coke was able to reduce costs by reducing the weight and thickness of its cans without compromising their strength.  Which other companies have made such changes to save money?

Look at the sheet above - renewable or sustainable fuels are the topic of the moment.  Research each of the fuels above.  What are the advantages and the disadvantages of each?
